Muslimah youth athletes frequently encounter specific challenges that require thoughtful responses grounded in Islamic principles. Understanding these challenges and developing appropriate coping strategies enables you to maintain both athletic progress and spiritual growth, especially when participating on a non-Muslim team.

Take a moment to reflect on the ayat below, and try to remember it on your athletic journey, inshaAllah.

Do people think once they say, “We believe,” that they will be left without being put to the test? – Al-Ankabut; 2

Three Common Challenges

If you’re playing on a Muslim team, alhamdulillah! InshaAllah these challenges don’t exist, but continue reading to see if improvements can be made in these areas on your team.

  • Time management. Time conflicts between practices, games, and prayer times require creative solutions and clear priorities. Find the Quibla and pick a safe space to pray if salah falls during your game or practice. If you’re traveling, combining prayers may be permissible depending on the distance. The key lies in viewing these accommodations as opportunities to demonstrate your commitment to Islam rather than obstacles to overcome.
  • Dietary restrictions. Read all labels before consuming anything; sometimes ingredients change. Training and competing during Ramadan is another challenge that requires careful planning. Speak with your parents if you really want to practice/compete during this month. You can also have your parents speak with a nutritionist who is familiar with developing plans for maintaining performance while observing Ramadan so you can honor both commitments.
  • Uniform and modesty. Just about every sport requires Muslimah youth athletes to modify their uniform to participate. Leggings and a long sleeve shirt are often the go-to options, but we have to do better than that. Instead of leggings, wear sweat pants, and make sure you’re wearing a sports bra. Even if you’re wearing long sleeve shirt, you need that extra layer of coverage for sports that require lots of movement.

Remember to talk with your parents before starting anything new. They love you and want the best for you, so sharing your intentions with them can assist you with getting proper guidance, support, and create a stronger bond between you, inshaAllah.
